Hughes and Fleming interviewed Ward with his solicitor by his side. The legal eagle got in first. ‘I want to place on record that my client believes he was intimidated by your officers, and placed under duress causing him to panic and do what he did. And furthermore, the young apprentice employed by my client refuses to press charges.’

Billy paused. ‘Finished, sir?’

‘For now,’ he said and sat back.

‘Thank you,’ said Billy and her polite words and friendly body language calmed the confrontational atmosphere. ‘I’ve spoken with senior officers, Peter, and we are still considering what charges you’ll face. A lot depends on our talk about the death of Simon Grovene.’

‘My client will be making no comment,’ said the solicitor.

‘It’s all right,’ said Ward raising a hand for the solicitor. ‘Ask me.’

Billy was pleased and Fleming impressed. ‘When did you notice your chisel was missing?’ she asked.

Ward pondered. ‘Not sure. Things disappear and you don’t know till you go to use them.’

‘So the chisel was in your tool box in the back of your ute?’ Ward nodded. ‘Do you leave the ute where someone has easy access?’

‘It’s secure at home but if I go out at night, it could be forced.’

‘When were you and the ute last out at night?’

‘I went to a meeting of Grovene’s creditors a couple of weeks back.’

‘And the ute?’

‘It was parked next to the school hall.’

‘And the tool box was secure?’

He hesitated. ‘I think so.’

Billy looked at him. ‘Now I need to establish your alibi.’

‘I told you, I haven’t got one. The only time I left me ute was in Eltham but I never went in a shop.’

‘Service station?’ asked Fleming, ‘public loo?’

Ward shook his head and the detectives let him go.
